Dr. Lucas Brown, DAOM, LAc with Rosedale Acupuncture and Wellness spoke with Studio 512 about how chronic pain affects entire families when someone is suffering.

Can you share with us how you approach treating chronic pain and the impact it has on loved ones?

“Well, it is the chronic pain that we specialize in. We want to give the residents of the Greater Austin Area their life back. Right, instead of just eating pain pills and, and thinking they’re gonna have to live with it. I always say, people suffering from chronic conditions are actually suffering from muliple things:

  • The pain itself. The pain can often be debilitating, it keeps you up at night, it makes you feel 10-30 years older than you actually are.

  • The suffering of not being able to do things you once loved, not being able to participate in family events or social things. It’s incredibly alienating.

  • On top of this we often see intervention fatigue, because these people have tried everything and nothing helps. It’s exhausting. Life can revolve around going to different specialists, taking more and more pills, even doing surgery which can potentially make things worse. Failed back surgery is one of the most heartbreaking things I treat here, because the patient went under the knife with the hopes that – ‘This is it! I’m finally going to find relief’ – and they recover only to experience greater pain or pain in a new area. That’s just devastating. And we have patients here who have had 3-4 or more back surgeries and found no relief before coming to us.

“Pain can erode your quality of life, create emotional and financial stress, and lead to feelings of helplessness for everyone involved. The reality is, when one person suffers, the whole family feels it.”

How does your clinic address the broader impacts of chronic pain?

“At Rosedale Acupuncture & Wellness, we take a holistic approach to treatment. This means we don’t just focus on relieving symptoms but also on addressing the root causes of the pain. Chronic pain isn’t just a physical ailment; it’s something that affects the mind, emotions, and relationships. We integrate a variety of therapies, not only to manage the pain but to help restore the patient’s overall well-being. By doing so, we aim to bring relief not just to the individual but to their entire family.

Can you give us an example of how chronic pain affects families and how your treatments can help?

“Absolutely. Let’s take a scenario I see often: someone suffering from neuropathy or chronic back pain. This kind of pain can be debilitating, making it difficult for them to participate in family activities, work, or even perform daily tasks. Over time, this can lead to a significant strain on relationships, as loved ones may feel helpless or even frustrated by their inability to alleviate the pain.

“Our approach is tailored to each patient, with the goal of giving them hope again.”
