Experts call for safer pain management

Pain relief medications are commonly used to treat both acute and chronic pain. Over-the-counter options as well as prescription opioids, are essential for managing discomfort from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions. However, their use raises concerns about effectiveness, side effects, and risks.
Dr Sudheer Dara, founder and director of Epione Pain Management, said, “Pain medications can provide quick relief but should always be used with proper supervision.Misuse, especially of stronger medications like opioids, can lead to dependence and complications.”
While over-the-counter medications are generally safe, long-term use or exceeding dosages can cause gastrointestinal issues, liver damage, or increase the risk of heart attack. Prescription opioids, meanwhile, are scrutinized for their role in addiction crises worldwide.
“Patients must have an open dialogue with doctors,” advised Dr Minal Chandra, a pain specialist. “Non-pharmacological treatments like physical therapy or acupuncture can be effective and may reduce the need for medications.”
