What Microsoft Surface Models Should I Avoid?
While some are the best they’ve ever been, not all Surface computers are worth the hype. If you go on Microsoft’s website, it can be pretty easy to be led astray into purchasing one of these lesser models.
- Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 ($750 at Amazon): While this would seem like a shoo-in for a best “budget laptop” option, its price and functionality give it away. This is barely cheaper than the amazing Copilot+PC laptops, and it’s display is far inferior to that computer’s, let alone those of many of the competitors in its price range. It’s got decent speed and battery life, but it’s not worth what it costs.
- Microsoft Surface Studio 2+ ($4,500 at Microsoft Store): Speaking of overpriced, the Studio series offers high-end performance and luxury at a cost. As alluring as an all-in-one PC might seem, this one clocks in at over four grand. Needless to say, you can build a PC for much cheaper.
What Is Copilot+PC?
Copilot is the name Microsoft gives its AI. The computers powered by this tech use an NPU (neural processing unit) in addition to a CPU and GPU in order to increase the amount of computing speed and power. The Surface laptops launch with Microsoft’s generative AI tools already installed.
Should I Buy Microsoft Complete?
Microsoft Complete is Microsoft’s protection plan for your Surface device. It begins at $150 for two years, but you can purchase a plan that protects your device for up to four years. The Complete plan covers physical damage, supporting coverage against both accidental damage and parts crapping out on you.
Is It Worth It to Get Older Surface Models?
A big complaint I have about Surface tablets and laptops is the price. If you can get an older model either new or refurbished for a reasonable price, it’s definitely worth looking into. The Copilot+PC builds are fast, and the battery life is next level, but they aren’t fundamentally doing things that devices from 2020 and 2021 weren’t able to do.
